Gionee officially unveils the 5.5-inch S8 smartphone

by on23 February 2016

Not the narrowest one around

During MWC 2016 show in Barcelona, Gionee has unveiled its new Gionee S8 5.5-inch smartphone which is just 74.9mm wide.

Although Gionee was quite keen to compare the new Gionee S8 to iPhone 6S Plus, Huawei Mate and Oppo R7 which are indeed wider, it somewhat forgot the LG G3, which still holds the title at 74.6mm. We have already spotted the Gionee Elife S8 earlier but specifications were a bit off in the benchmark.

Nevertheless, the Gionee S8 has a full-metal design and comes with a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 AMOLED screen covered with 2.5D glass. It also has 3D Touch technology so it recognizes touch, tap and press. The Gionee S8 is powered by Mediatek's Helio P10 SoC, which is an octa-core CPU part clocked at 2.0Hz and featuring Mali T860 GPU. It also has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space.

The rest of the specs include a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.8 aperture, RWB sensor, laser focus and Phase Detection AF and 8-megapixel front camera for selfie and all other usual specifications including a fingerprint reader in the home button. It runs on Amigo 3.2 OS based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and packs a 3,000mAh battery with fast charging option.

Gionee S8 also has a unique feature which allows the smartphone to log into two WhatsApp accounts, allowing users to separate work and personal accounts.

The Gionee S8 should be available by the end of next month with a price set at €450.
