Makes it the eighth largest

While lacking the fanfare in the west that its rivals get, the Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has just announced that it sold 50 million smartphones last year.

Oppo has grown quite quickly as it only entered the market in 2008.  With those sorts of sales it has become a major player in the handset market and the eighth largest mobile phone maker in the world.

Those 50 million sales represente a 67 per cent year-on-year growth mostly focused on breaking into the markets close to China.

Sean Deng, Oppo's managing director said that the Southeast Asia region is an area for growth for his outfit.

Huawei and Xiaomi also had big years in 2015 despite the fall in the Chinese market while more western focused companies did badly. Currently, six out of the global top-10 smartphone vendors are China-based suppliers, according to Gartner.
