MediaTek will sell 400 million smartphone SoCs this year

40 million heading to Western Europe

MediaTek is winning market share in all territories as the outfit moves to challenge Qualcomm. . 

The company predicts that some 400 million smartphones sold in 2015 will have a MediaTek SoC. As we pointed out yesterday, more than 150 million will be LTE enabled and some of the 400 million will be 3G and feature phones.

MediaTek expects more than 40 million phones in Western Europe to have a MediaTek SoC chip inside. This is a quarter of of the regional market share and means the company had a huge success penetrating Europe this year. MediaTek SoCs are shipping, or will ship, inside LG, Sony, Acer and HTC brands, as well as Chinese smartphone makers such as Kazaam, BQ and Archos.

The company has announced a medium to premium range P10 processor – a 2GHz octa core Cortex A53 that should start shipping in this quarter. The company is shipping Helios X10 inside a few phones available in this market – the company's MT6753 the phone that supports CDMA2000 and range of LTE frequencies have been shipping for a few months.

All eyes are looking to a release of the first device with Helio X20 – the ten core with three cluster architecture with Category 6 LTE modem that supports carrier aggregation. The P10 and X20 sales will reflect in the 2016 sales but they should both start shipping soon with some release possible before the end of the year, and early 2016.
