Motorola updates the Moto X as well

by on05 September 2014

With 5.2-inch 1080p display, better SoC and more

In addition to the affordable US $179.99 Moto G 2014, Motorola has also updated its flagship Moto X smartphone as well. While the previous Moto X was not exactly a big deal, due to dual-core SoC, 720p screen, 10-megapixel main camera and the flagship price, the new Moto X 2014 might have a brighter future with 5.2-inch 1080p screen, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 quad-core SoC and a main 13-megapixel rear camera.

Measuring at 140.8x72.4x3.8-9.9mm and weighing 144g, the design of the new Moto X 2014 is a whole different story as it features an aluminum frame as well as a water-repellent coating, which does not make it water-proof but will allow it to survive a small spill or rain.

The main update is definitely the 5.2-inch 1920x1080 423ppi AMOLED touchscreen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. Motorola also updated the SoC side of things so the new Moto X 2014 features the well known Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with 2.5GHz quad-core CPU, Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Although most flagships are already equipped with 3GB of RAM, 2GB should not be bad either. The Moto X 2014 will be available with 16GB and 32GB of built-in storage space and lacks the microSD card slot found on the Moto G.

Powered by a rather modest 2,300mAh battery, the Moto X 2014 will be running on stock Android 4.4.4 KitKat with few Motorola's additions, including the well known and now improved voice commands and gesture controls via IR sensor. The new Moto X 2014 also got front-facing stereo speakers, and a much better 13-megapixel rear camera with dual ring flash and Sony Exmor RS 1/3.06 sensor and f/2.25 lens which is capable of recording 4K video.

Motorola also updated its Moto Maker customization options which now include genuine leather as well as previous available wooden covers. The Moto Maker is still exclusive to the United States.

In addition to the Moto X 2014, Motorola has also announced a couple of accessories to go with the new flagship smartphone, including the Moto Hint, a small Bluetooth earpiece that will match your Moto X, and the Moto Power Pack Micro, a small 1500mAh battery pack with a few other features. The Moto Hint will set you back for a rather steep US $149.99 but it definitely looks like one of the best Bluetooth earpieces that we have seen so far, easpecially since it also uses Moto Voice to give you directions, use dialer and much more.

The US $39.99 priced Moto Power Pack Micro is not half bad either as, in addition to charging your phone on the fly, it can also double up as a phone or key finder.

As far as the Moto X 2014 availability and price are concerned, Motorola said that it will be available in a select markets, including the United States, Mexico, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, later this month, with a price set at US $99.99 with a two-year contract at AT&T or Verizon in the states or US $499.99 unlocked and without any contract.
