Jelly Bean combined finally bigger than Gingerbread

by on09 July 2013

Took a while

Despite the fact that Android 4.1 has been out for a while, Gingerbread Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 is still the most dominant Android build in the world. According the Android Developers website Gingerbread still holds 34.1 percent of the market making it much more popular than Ice Cream Sandwich with 23.3 percent.

The new hope called Jelly Bean that includes 4.1.x Android has 32.3 percent of market and has a real potential to overthrown the Gingerbread in the month to come. If you combine Android 4.1 and 4.2, both named Jelly Bean you get the 37.9 percent or bigger number than the Gingerbread.

The data was collected during the last two week, ending July 8th 2013 from all the devices that visited the Google Play Store. Few people need to be reminded that Android suffers from a serious case of fragmentation, one of the main reasons why Google decided to stick with 4.2 for more than six months and why not even 4.3 made it to the final version, let alone Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

An upgrade to the latest version of Android is a quite rare option and in most cases you will end up changing your phone then getting a new version of Android on it, simply as companies reported you need a lot of resources in order to upgrade Android to the latest one version and putting a lot of people to work on a phone update kind of eats away at your profits. Software upgrades are something that Apple does way better and there are no any indication of this changing anytime soon.
