Sony readies two new LTE phones

Xperia GX and Xperia SX hit Japan this summer

Sony is slowly but surely getting back into shape. The outfit has just announced two new Android phones and both seem to have what it takes to make a mark on the overcrowded smartphone market.

The Xperia GX seems to be Sony’s new flagship device and it sports a 4.6-inch 720p display, 13-megapixel camera and a dual-core 1.5GHz chip. There is still no word on what sort of processor to expect. The Xperia S features a 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260, but this particular chip does not feature LTE. The same goes for all currently available ST Ericsson chips, so there’s a very good chance Sony went for Qualcomm’s 28nm S4. The GX also features 16GB of internal storage, which is surprising given that the Xperia S boasts 32GB.

xperia-sx

The Xperia SX features similar specs - 1.5GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of storage and LTE. However, all these goodies are packed in a tiny 3.7-incher. Sony is peddling the SX as the lightest LTE phone in the world, weighing a mere 95g. We think it is an interesting approach. Quite a few people prefer compact devices and there is no reason why they should miss out on all the latest tech if they do not want to get a huge phone.

Both phones will ship with Android 4.0, they will be available in black or white and like the rest of Sony's Xperia NXT lineup, they look pretty sleek. No word on pricing or worldwide availability yet. Bear in mind that Sony has yet to ship Xperia P, Xperia U and Xperia Sola devices, which were announced months ago. The GX and SX should launch in Japan this summer, so don’t expect to see them in stores anytime soon.
