Medfield not the best, but not mediocre either

Although Chipzilla may have not been the earliest bird when it comes to smartphones but the company sure knows how to test the waters. It has been reported that Atom Z2460-powered Lava Xolo phone did quite well on benchmarks.

The review suggests that if Intel’s goal was to get in on the action and warn that its x86 is a force to be reckoned with, then it’s fulfilled. Xolo does surprisingly well against the likes of Galaxy S2, Droid Razr Maxx, iPhone 4S and One S, which is quite a feat for a number of reasons. Perhaps most importantly, all of the aforementioned phones boast dual cores, whereas Xolo’s Z2460 is a single-core that relies on hyperthreading only.

While the review clearly shows that the X900’s Atom Z2460 isn’t the king of the hill, it doesn’t say it’s a flop either. Quite the contrary, Intel seems to have surprised everyone as all aspects of Z2460’s performance are at worst decent.

As for sheer CPU power, the X900 isn’t the leader but closely follows the top dogs in each of the tests. A the same time, the platform is as power efficient as newer OMAP 4 based platforms and although it’s not the most efficient of the lot, it’s still good enough to compete with Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus.

The weakest link in the chain is said to be Atom Z2460’s graphics core - PowerVR SGX 540, the same one found in Samsung Galaxy Nexus’ OMAP 4 and even the old Nexus S. This is despite the overclock from 304MHz on the Nexus to 400MHz on Xolo.

The review claims that software compatibility is not a reason for concern since most apps worked flawlessly. The bottom line however is clear – the fact that it even competes with A9 dual cores is compliment enough. Now we want to see more.
