Shadowgun brings Quake looking games to phones

For $4.99

Today’s smartphones and the chips behind them have a lot of unharnessed processing power, and Nvidia wants to take advantage of them with its The way it’s meant to be played team. The goal of TWIMTBP VP Ashu Reges team is to make Geforce and Tegra more attractive for developers.

Shadowgun is the fruit of such collaboration and the game has officially launched yesterday. It sells for $4.99 / €3.99 and it represents a fully functional Quake style first person shooter. We saw the game this summer, but now it’s available to anyone.

We’ve tested it at LG Optimus S phone powered with Tegra 2 and we can tell you that a few years back you would be impressed to see this running on your desktop PC. Apart from water, everything else looks quite great, even via HDMI on a 46-inch TV. Of course it’s a mobile phone game and you don’t get as many polygons as on a high-end console or PC games, but for a mobile phone / tablet game, it is a very good effort.

On a big screen, you will suffer from lack of anti aliasing, but with Tegra 3, we believe that even this will be possible. Shadowgun is a typical Quake style shooter, but you do run into some super badass robot bosses that need a lot of bullets and firepower to be taken out.

Even the explosions look quite good. It’s a shame that there is a demo version so you could be able to try before you buy it, but it you like 3D shooters on phone / tablet, it is worth considering. You can check out a gameplay video
, and we can confirm that the actual game looks the same.
