Dual-core Androids now officially a bargain

by on13 October 2011

Deal of the Day: LG for €299, Moto Atrix for €329

The age of dual-core Android “superphones” is here, but if you thought you would have to break the bank to get one, think again.

LG and Motorola have repeatedly slashed prices on their flagship phones, the P990 and Atrix. In fact, LG’s P990 is now selling for just €299, which is basically the same as a decent single-core phone. It packs a 4-inch  800x480 screen, 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of memory, 8MP camera with 1080p support, HDMI and a host of other features. Back at launch, the P990 cost €599, but by February it was selling for €499.

In the meantime, Motorola is rolling out its revamped Atrix 2 phone, so the original handset seems in for a big price cut. The “old” version is also based on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor at 1GHz, but unlike the LG, it boasts an impressive 960x540 4-inch panel. It also ships with more memory, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage to be precise. The price cut has not gone into effect yet, but some German retailers are already selling it for €329 to €349. Four months ago, it cost €499.

For comparison, Apple’s iPhone 4S goes on sale tomorrow and the cheapest 16GB version is supposed to cost €699 in Europe. The cheap and cheerful iPhone 4 8GB is set to cost €550 and is neither cheap or cheerful.
