New phone Android OS is Hybrid

by on16 February 2011

Merges Honeycomb and Gingerbread, yummy
Just before Google CEO Erick Schmidt announced it, we learned from industry sources that the next phone OS update for Android will merge Honeycomb and Gingerbread. All it needs now is a glass of nice, lukewarm milk.

Android 2.4 remains Gingerbread, just updated of course, but Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb stays a tablet-only OS. It will never get to phones, at least this is what our sources are saying.

The new update won’t come soon, as Android 2.4 is just around the corner and Android 3.0 is about to start shipping shortly. It might take up to six months to see this major phone OS upgrade.

Other industry chaps were telling us that Android 2.4 handles dual-cores much better, but the dual-core support is actually at the Linux kernel level more than in the Android OS itself. We can probably expect some sort of preview at Google’s IO in May 10 2011.
