Gingerbread on HTC HD2, Desire, Wildfire...

The hard working XDA developers, including a chap called MTC have managed to get a quite nice version of Gingerbread running on numerous HTC phones.

Not everything works, but first impressions are great. It runs great on HTC HD2 and the list of supported phones includes Google Nexus One, HTC Droid Eris, HTC Hero, HTC Hero CDMA, HTC Desire, HTC Wildfire, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Incredible, HTC Sapphire, HTC Dream, T-mobile Pulse and Nexian Journey A890.

The current 0.5 build works great but it does have some bugs including the fact that GPS and camera don’t work and that some people have issues with the dialer.

Installing Gingerbread is piece of cake. You just need to download the z7 file, unzip it, copy it in Android folder at your SDHC card and start two files in this folder to boot. When it boots you have Gingerbread on your phone.

Some fancy features including SIP calling work as well, as do fancy Google Maps 5. One can only hope that the GPS will get fixed soon to make the maps really useful.

You can find the link to the quite functional HTC HD2 ROM here, and the list of the other phones and links to their ROMs here. Kudos to all the hard working people who made it possible.
