LG launches Optimus 2X superphone

by on16 December 2010

First dual-core smartphone
LG has officially introduced the Optimus 2X, the world's first dual-core smartphone based on Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor.

Optimus 2X features a 4-inch WVGA screen, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for expansion. It boasts an 8MP rear camera and a 1.3MP front camera and it can cope with 1080p playback and recording in MPEG-4 and H.264. However, the best feature is native HDMI support, which transforms the Optimus 2X into a media player and lets you show off in front of your friends.

The Tegra 2 processor is clocked at 1GHz and packs quite a punch. It's also Nvidia's great white hope for the mobile market, but it has found few takers so far. We can only hope that the introduction of new operating systems and apps will speed up dual-core adoption, as several companies already offer quite interesting ARM-based dual-cores.

Sadly, the new phone is stuck with Android 2.2, but LG is committed to releasing a Gingerbread update as soon as possible. We were the Optimus 2X in early 2011 and this probably explains it. Also, it's quite unusual to see such an announcement before US networks got their hands on the phone, which shows LG wanted to get some publicity in time for Christmas.

No word on pricing yet, but don't expect it to come cheap. We are expecting a price tag of about €500 in Euroland and $500+ in the States.
