But only 3G and 3G S models

Yesterday was
the day that many predicted might be a “Holy Day” or national holiday for iPhone owners on the AT&T network. As expected, it was nothing more than an official rollout of long-awaited MMS support that every iPhone owner should have received since day one in June 2007.

What AT&T failed to realize is that all iPhone users have been waiting for this feature, not just 3G and 3G S owners. It seems that the telecommunications provider is ditching multimedia support on its EDGE network because of possible bandwidth saturation issues. Ironically, a compromise still had to be made for the its network to “carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One.”

The following statement was released by the company earlier this month:

“We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.”

AT&T specifically capitalized “Day One” to insist that the fruit-themed phone device has now received a royal blessing and that network operations will now work at their expected levels of consumer feedback. We have no choice but to respond with a good laugh at this implied statement, simply because the anti-Net Neutrality advocate is far from receiving public approval and has been spiraling down a hill of PR failure due to lack of wireless network integrity.

On another note, iPhone 3G and 3G S users running firmware 3.0.1 can enable MMS support by simply downloading a new AT&T Carrier Update in iTunes that takes about three seconds to install. Official documentation can be found here.
