Confirms August 4870 X2 launch

During an interview with Techtree.com in India, Raja Koduri, worldwide CTO (Products Group) at AMD, gave a few snippets of juicy information and confirmed an August launch for the Radeon HD 4870 X2.

He also said that "AMD has already built a computer that has four 4870X2s in it. So it has eight GPUs; drivers will not be supporting eight GPUs at this point of time."  So, maybe we can expect something really interesting at a later stage from AMD, although with CrossFire scaling as it is, we can't see that going from four to eight GPU's is going to make much of a difference for most gamers.

When asked about PCI Express bandwidth limitations on motherboards with dual x8 slots and if there was enough bandwidth for the latest generation of cards, he said "Yes, because our drivers and the games, at least the last generation games, they've been optimized to avoid traffic between GPUs. But my prediction is that moving forward it will be important that there's more bandwidth between GPUs." If that statement is indeed true, then there's no wonder why both CrossFire and SLI scale so badly in some games.

It also looks like AMD is going to take Fusion further than just to the entry level graphics market, although this won't happen for the first and maybe not even second generation, but AMD seems to be considering at least mid-range graphics built into its CPUs in the future.
