Cards coming soon

ATI plans a lot of mobile cards for the mid-year notebook refresh. There will be two major platform launches: Cantiga GM45 from Intel and Puma from AMD. Both of them will happen around Computex (June 2008) or should we say late Q2?

ATI is getting ready with its discrete mobile cards and M88 is the one that will catch the most attention. This is the first high-performance GPU for notebooks that ATI has released in a while. R600 never got its mobile part, simply due to the fact that it was incredibly hot and it was too big to be placed in notebooks.

M88, or Radeon Mobility 3870, is based on RV670 and we believe it will do well in notebooks, but don’t expect this GPU in thin and light machines. It still needs some thick 15 or 17-inch notebook as it will require a heat-pipe to cool it.

Two M88 will make a Radeon Mobility 3870 X2 card for ultra-high performance notebooks, but we are sure that Nvidia will launch Geforce 9 series for notebook that will support SLI, which has the chance to be even faster than ATI.

All this should take place in Q2 2008.
