Medion / Hofer claims 8600GS is high end

Medion is well known for its low priced, but good value for the money, PCs. However, we are not sure how this company can get away with claiming that its €899 machine sells with "NVIDIA GEFORCE 8600 GS HIGH-END GRAFIK”. The card does have an exotic HDMI connector, but this certainly doesn’t turn a mainstream card into a high-end one.

The special thing about this machine is that it sells in hundreds of thousands in a very popular food chain, and a lot of consumers who buy it only know the brands from their stickers. These easily fall off, as does whatever the manufacturer claims on those sitckers, and for them an 8600 GS is the best possible choice.

The GeForce 8600 GS card is a slower version of the G84 chip, and in retail it would sell for about €70 to €80; and we know that what Nvidia calls high-end is priced from €400 to €600.

We are sure that Nvidia’s sales will let you call a GeForce 8300 a super high-end card, as long as you buy 200,000 chips or more, but this is probably a big deception of consumers, and if anyone complains this might become a real issue in consumer protection circles. Did we just hear someone mention cheating?

If it comforts you, Medion will pack its machine with an E6750 Core 2 Duo and an LG super multi-drive that plays Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVDs and CDs, has 2GB of Samsung memory and a 500GB drive.

You can find out more here.

Update: If you live in the U.K., you can find the same system here for £629.99
