Quite steep but expected

Although we were hoping to see some rather competitive pricing from Nvidia, it appears that the two new GM204 Maxwell based graphics cards, scheduled to be announced on 18th of September at Game24 event, will have a rather steep price set at US $599 and US $399, respectively.

The Gefroce GTX 980 and Geforce GTX 970 price details were originally posted at 3DCenter.org and after a quick check with our sources, we can report that the price is correct. Of course, these figures should be taken with a grain of salt since bear Nvidia can change the price at the last minute.

According to our sources, the steep price and the gap between the GTX 980 and the GTX 970 were expected. The US $599 price tag for the GTX 980 puts it roughly at the same price range as the Geforce GTX 780 Ti while the US $399 price tag puts the Geforce GTX 970 in line with the GTX 780.

When compared to the competition, the US $599 is exactly the launch price of the Radeon R9 290X, but with the recent price cut, the R9 290X has a lower price of US $449. The situation is similar with the Geforce GTX 970, which should go against the R9 290, which is priced at around US $350.

The same report suggest that the both the Geforce GTX 980 and the Geforce GTX 970 will be available in custom, non-reference designs, although custom GTX 980 designs will come at a later date, something that we wrote earlier.

In case you missed it, Nvidia plans to introduce these two new graphics cards during its Game24 event which kicks off on September 18th, at 7:30 PM PDT, or around early morning on September 19th in Europe.
