AMD grabs more GPU market share

by on15 August 2013

Never settle for Nvidia

AMD is alive and kicking, kicking Nvidia's butt. According to Jon Peddie Research, AMD managed to push its GPU market share to 21.9 percent last quarter, up 10.9 percent sequentially.

AMD wasn’t the only CPU maker that upped its share. Intel gained 6.2 percent to end the quarter with a 62 percent share. Nvidia was the big loser in the standings. Its share dropped 8 percent last quarter to 16.1 percent. For all its talk of Haswell design wins, Nvidia appears to be suffering in a weak PC market. Nvidia’s discrete GPU shipments were down 8.9 percent from last quarter, while mobile shipments dipped 7.1 percent.

On the other hand, Intel and AMD are boosting their sale thanks to powerful integrated graphics, which are slowly killing off low-end GPUs. At the moment 99 percent of Intel’s non-server processors ship with integrated graphics, while 67 percent of AMD’s non-server chips have graphics. Also, AMD still ships a limited number of IGPs.

Oddly enough, AMD managed to increase its mobile APU shipments by 47.1 percent, which is a staggering and quite surprising figure. On the whole, the PC market is hurting. JPR found that graphics shipments in Q2 were down 6.8 percent compared to a year ago, while PC shipments were down 11.2 percent.
