Nvidia 306.97 Windows 8 driver ready

by on11 October 2012

WHQL, of course

Windows 8 comes in two weeks and some people might be happy to know that that both Nvidia and AMD have their drivers ready for the new OS.

It will be fun to see how much it takes printer manufacturers to come with the new drivers but this is another story altogether. AMD has Catalyst 12.8 ready since 15th of August and Beta of 12.9 since September 26th for your convenience. Nvidia has the WHQL version  of 306.97 Windows 8 and Windows 7 combo driver. The 64 bit version, something that became standard for anyone that uses more than 4GB of memory and understands the paradigm that Windows 32 bit cannot address more than maximal 4GB is a saucy 217.39MB download.

Windows 8 works quite well and you can play games under the new OS without any issues, but it will take a while until we see all the exclamation signs vanish from our Alienware MX11 R3 gaming rig. The good news is that sound, graphics, and Wlan work without any issues, which is enough for good gameplay.

From 304 drivers onwards Nvidia supports TXAA, a new film style anti-aliasing technique designed specifically to reduce temporal aliasing (crawling and flickering in motion) through a combination of hardware AA, custom CG film style AA resolve, and a temporal filter. This works on 600 series Kepler graphics cards. The new 306 driver supports latest 600 series GPUs including 650 TI and various SLI and 3D vision profiles

You can get more details about the driver and download it here.
