Cebit 2009: High factory overclock

Asus
has showcased its newest Formula graphics card series that will be available in both ATI and Nvidia flavors. This new series is aimed at overclockers and Asus claims that these will have impressive overclocking capabilities.

The one that we were able to see were based on ATI´s HD 4800 series GPUs, and one was based on Nvidia´s GTX 260 GPU. The cooler design depends on the actual card, but the one for HD 4870 Formula edition had four heatpipes, and Asus claims that they overclock much better than the previous cards, but that is left to be seen once these cards hit e-tail/retail.

The cooler on this series looks like a formula and according to Asus, they expect up to 20 percent better cooling capabilities. The only weird thing is that it apparently blows air from the PCI bracket over the GPU and inside the case which is quite strange as nobody wants that much hot air inside and on most other dual slot coolers the hot air is pushed outside.

According to Asus, we shouldn´t wait too long for these cards, but a specific availability date hasn't been announced just yet.
