Games Convention 08: Frames per second can deceive

We had
a chance to talk to some key people at Crytek, the guys behind Crysis and Cry engine one and two. We learned that these guys are not convinced that frames per second are the right number to be used as a performance reference.

The best human eye can catch 60 to 70 FPS or should we say hertz, while the rest is pure waste of resources. At the same time, the human brain can notice when the FPS number drops below 20FPS where you usually see some stuttering and your brain realises that it sees a lot of continues pictures in motion, and not the video.

The problem of FPS is that you take an average number, let's say 55 FPS but this is the summary of the timeframe where at one point you have 200 FPS and once you get 20FPS and again, on average you get 55FPS that is actually not playable at certain points.

We are aware of this problem but this is no real remedy for this problem as the problematic is tricky enough. We just got people used to FPS, as the number that tells you something about the performance and now we are about to start looking for alternatives.
