Does it right this time

As expected, considering yesterday's press release about its upcoming Catalyst 10.2 and 10.3 drivers, AMD has rolled out its newest Catalyst 10.2. Unlike the previous version that brough few improvements, Catalyst 10.2 is much more serious and it looks like AMD's plans to pay more attention to drivers are more than just words.

The new Catalyst 10.2 brings bunch of feature updates as well as few performance updates. It comes with the v8.702 display driver and supports Radeon HD 2000, HD 3000, HD 4000 and HD 5000 series cards.

The new features include support for applications profiles for ATI CrossFireX platforms. These profiles will be released as separate executable file which will install latest set of profiles. The new driver also brings support for PowerPlay on ATI CrossFireX platforms which, according to release notes, delivers significant power saving benefits for those systems that are packing HD 5900, HD 5800 and HD 5700 series cards in CrossfireX. It also brings support for DisplayPort audio as well as support for CrossfireX on Eyefinity configurations.

The performance improvements are not as impressive as the feature updates, but they still include Dirt 2 improvement of up to 8% on ATI HD 5970, HD 5800 and HD 5700 series cards, up to 6% improvement in Battleforge for HD 5870 Crossfire, a significant improvement for Unigine Heaven engine on Crossfire configurations with HD 5800 and HD 5700 series cards in DirectX 9, as well as a small 4% improvement in Chronicles of Riddick game.

You can check out the full release notes here, while the driver packs for all operating systems can be found here.
