Mobiles to match console power
In an interview with Develop-online Epic Vice President Mark
Rein voiced his optimism for Tegra fueled mobile devices and the future
of mobile gaming in general. Rein claims Tegra 2 is not 'lower spec
stuff' and that it features a promising dual core architecture with a
proper DirectX 9 GPU.
"It is amazingly powerful for a mobile platform and performs well
within the power range that you’d want for Unreal Engine 3, so it could
be a good fit for our engine," said Rein."If Tegra 2 can
do what it does today just think how much power we’d get with Tegra 3
and Tegra 4. Same goes for future generations of iPhone and iPod Touch."
Rein believes mobile devices powered by similar chips could easily
match the performance of Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 on a per-pixel basis
and that they might eventually exceed their performance. He argues that
Epic's Unreal Engine 3 is a good match for both Tegra-based devices and
Apple's iPhone 3GS and third gen iPod Touch.
"There's clearly a big business there," said Rein. Considering the
sheer power of recently announced ARM processors and Nvidia's Tegra, it
hard not to share Rein's upbeat outlook. However, Sony and Nintendo
probably won't sit idly by as mobile phone makers drink their milkshake
in the mobile gaming market.
