40nm graphics production at TSMC troublesome

Bumpy start

The RV740 is TSMC’s first 40nm graphics chip and Nvidia is producing its notebook based 40nm chips as we speak. Nvidia will reveal new 40nm based notebook products at Computex, and what we heard is that they got a few design wins to go along with the launch.

The RV740 is the only real 40nm product that you can buy today and production is being very limited. ATI cannot get enough of these chips, as the demand is high and TSMC's 40nm capabilities are limited. This transition might be the possible winning edge that Globalfoundries might serve well in the future.

If Globalfoundries guys can transition to a new process faster than TSMC and get better yields, they will win many customers, probably including Nvidia, as graphics guys are the ones that need a fast transition and as many transistors as possible.

TSMC’s 40nm is getting better but not in the tempo that would fix the 40nm RV740, Radeon HD 4770 yields over night, but at least they are going in the right direction. Until 40nm production doesn’t significantly improve, RV740 will suffer from somewhat limited availability.
