Slightly bigger than an iPhone

We told you a bit about Tegra, Nvidia's new mobile and multimedia internet device platform and we managed to get a picture of the reference board.

Nvidia also told us that there are some working prototypes as well but we didn't manage to see one while we were visiting. The key feature is the low power chip for mobile phones and MID devices and at the same time, the reference board comes with HDMI. Nvidia is talking about sub-500 mV with display.

The mobile platform can play H.264 in 1080p for 10+ hours while it can encode HD in 720p. It will fit in the smallest phone form factors, but as you can see on the picture the reference board focuses on iPhone sized devices or slightly larger. We were also told that Nvidia can put Tegra in a Multi Chip Module packaging having a 3G modem, Tegra and memory in the same packaging making it small enough to fit the small phones but this mainly all depends on the customers' wishes.

Tegra is focusing on smartphones and this remains its main target and its highly unlikely we will see any Tegra devices in small netbooks anytime soon. Tegra runs Windows CE, Windows mobile or Linux  but the focus is Windows. As we said in previous part, the first devices based on Tegra are scheduled for Q1 2009 launch.
