Priced higher than anticipated

News has reached us from several sources over the weekend expressing some surprise about the upcoming release of the downloadable Big Surf Island for Burnout Paradise by Criterion Games.

Initially, it was rumored that when the Big Surf Island downloadable add-on was released, it was expected to be sold for 800 Microsoft Points (or $10 on the Xbox 360 or $10 on the PlayStation Network), but it seems now that Criterion has decided that the amount of content and the number of hours of playability deserve a higher price tag.

When launched on June 11th, we can now confirm that the Big Surf Island downloadable add-on for Burnout Paradise will go for 1200 Microsoft points, or about $15 US, and the PlayStation Network download will set you back $15, as well. It is unknown why Criterion and publisher Electronic Arts have elected to go with a higher price tag, but our sources tell us that the longer than expected development cycle, coupled with the amount of included content, did factor into the final decision.

As for the achievements, we can now confirm that the Xbox 360 version will offer an additional 110 points in five new achievements, which brings the final stats with the available add-on packages for Burnout Paradise on the Xbox 360 to a grand total of 60 achievements for a total of 1250 points.

Those that are PlayStation 3 owners seem to fare a bit better with 10 new trophies, 3 of them sliver and 7 bronze, which gives the game a total of 98 trophies on the PS3. According to what we hear, Criterion is proud of the fact that with the Big Surf Island downloadable add-on that Burnout Paradise on the PS3 includes a grand total of 98 trophies, which are 32 more than the next closest game.

Big Surf Island is reportedly the last planned add-on for Burnout Paradise, and the add-on is roughly the size of Paradise City and includes some interesting new features such as the new mega-jumps. With the title now being moved to the Greatest Hits product lines, the timing of the release of the downloadable add-on pack could turn out to be an excellent move by Criterion to keep the title fresh with new players who are just starting to explore Paradise City for the first time.

It does remain to be seen, however, if the higher than expected price might keep some from taking the plunge and downloading Big Surf Island. We suspect it will be very popular with those who have been playing the game for some time, as the add-on pack was designed with the concept that if you could see it, you could drive it. This alone could propel the sales of Big Surf Island. According to reports, Criterion has taken the step of including an insert promoting the downloadable content that is included in new purchases of the greatest hits packaged version of the game.
