CES 2010: 6.9mm thick, borderless design, absolutely stunning

LG is on a quest this year to become the manufacturer to achieve “world’s first” in the area of thin LED form factor, and we are inclined to say without hesitation that the company has definitely achieved this goal. This year, the company’s presence at the International CES is probably one of the biggest at the Central Hall exhibit, covering a floor space of roughly 6000 square feet at the main entrance where crowds are overwhelmed with LED-backlit LCD HDTVs in every direction.

This year, the company revealed a strong focus on LED backlighting with six new series of LED models in its brand new INFINIA series.  However, its most prided accomplishment this year comes in the form of an Ultra Slim LED LCD HDTV known as the LG Infinia LE9500. The HDTV display measures in at 47-inches diagonally and officially expresses the world’s slimmest LCD form factor with a depth of just 6.9 millimeters. The new model only has a 10mm bezel and looks absolutely stunning in person. In addition, the entire panel employs direct LED backlighting with 240 dimmable zones rather than an edge-based implementation.

There is no question as to why this LED-backlit LCD HDTV in the Infinia series won the CES 2010 "Best of Innovations" Award. We should also note that the LE9500 and LE8500 are the world’s first THX Certified liquid crystal displays to receive THX Bright Room Mode. The goal of THX Bright Room Mode is to closely reproduce the HD Color Standard and other video parameters used by filmmakers in dark mastering studios, with careful adjustments made for brighter environments.

"Because all rooms are unique in regards to lighting, the amount and type of light in the home theater can have a dramatic impact on how you perceive color and detail," said John Dahl, director of education at THX. "THX Bright Room will provide home theater enthusiasts a playback setting that allows them to experience the rich details and vividness of their favorite movies when the lights are turned on and the window shades open."

Pricing and availability of these new Ultra Slim LED displays is yet to be announced, but we expect them to be available before the second half of the year. We decided to take a few pictures of LG’s LED LCD HDTV display center for our readers to get a good look at just how big this booth is. Stay tuned for more updates.
