Who pulled the plug?

Power went
out in San Francisco, California on Monday at approximately 2 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, shutting down servers and Web sites such as Six Apart blog hosting service located in San Francisco and other Internet sites with offices in San Francisco also reported outage problems, including Craigslist, Yelp, Red Envelope, CNET, Technorati and 365 Main, a Web hub hosting company for Craigslist, CNET and Technorati.

Rumors quickly spread that the outage was linked to a disgruntled employee at 365 Main who reportedly had damaged equipment at the facility and taken out the power. These stories turned out to be false, and the power outage was correctly blamed on the utility company, Pacific Gas & Electric.

The extent of the power outage extended throughout San Francisco’s Financial District and Peninsula and affected an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 Pacific Gas & Electric Company customers in these areas. Power was restored to most customers by 3:30 P.M. PST and was thought to caused by an explosion at an underground transformer vault.
