Days Of Thunder game latest for Paramount

It seems that Paramount Digital Entertainment didn’t learn much from the release of the Warriors video game based on the movie by the same name. This time around, Paramount will attempt to turn the NASCAR movie, Days Of Thunder (or Top Car, as many call it) into another video game. The movie was a rehash of the studio’s Top Gun movie that similar to Days Of Thunder featured Tom Cruise, but this time included racing cars rather than fighter jets.

The game itself will be a download only affair, with it coming this summer for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Mac platforms. The development is being handled by Piranha Games; and from what our sources tell us, the game will focus on just the racing and drop the melodramatic story background of the film.

While this isn’t the first attempt at a Days of Thunder video game, it might attract the attention of the casual gamer who is nursing a grudge over the demise of the EA Sports NASCAR franchise. The game will offer four race modes for offline play, with support for up to 12 players in the online multiplayer mode. Some car tuning and customization will be offered, but it might be the mini pit stop game that could end up getting most of the attention.

While the game does not appear to have an official NASCAR license from what we have been able to learn, it does make us wonder what kind of game this will end up looking like in the end, with no official sponsors or drivers beyond the characters in the movie. While we will hold out hope that it might be better than some of the recent offerings from Paramount Digital Entertainment, it is difficult to think that a game based on an old movie that wasn’t that popular to begin with will attract much attention. One thing is for sure: it has to look better than the last Days of Thunder game that we played, as the hardware has evolved since then.
