Toshiba announces 3D graphics for phones

Better than the DS Lite or PSP



Toshiba
has announced it is releasing a new 3D graphics chip that can deliver graphics better than those found on current handheld games machines.

The new LSI (large-scale integration) chip 100 mega-polygons per second which is better than the DS Lite or PSP. Current mobile phone graphics chips can only manage about 3 mega-polygons per second.

Toshiba boasts that the the new LSI brings realistic shading to the phone platform for the first time. It uses the company's Media Embedded Processor (MeP) to handle sound, host processing and wide-screen LCD display in s single 13 x 13 x 1.2mm package.

The company is sending out samples in October.
