Wii price drop appears to have paid off

Numbers for the Thanksgiving week are in, and it looks that the price cut on the Wii has led to sales victory with over one-half million units sold. The PlayStation 3 claims an all-time record, with an impressive 440,000 consoles sold during last week. As for the Xbox 360, no exact numbers have yet to be released, but Microsoft is claiming that sales last week were the biggest so far this year. Our sources suggest that the Xbox 360 number is estimated to have been around 275,000 to 330,000, which would put Microsoft in last place in the first big round of the holiday sales wars.

Bundle deals were all the rage this past holiday shopping weekend for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Retailers offered very attractive bundle incentives for both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, which amounted to additional titles being thrown in at the $299 price. In the case of the Xbox 360 Elite, Best Buy was selling the console with two included titles, plus an additional four titles at the $299 price tag. While the additional titles that Best Buy was throwing in might not have been the greatest, it still gives you a flavor for the deals being offered.

The price cut on the Wii seemed to be a big attraction, but Nintendo managed to move over 1 million units of DS and DSi portables in addition to their Wii sales. The Xbox 360 Arcade, which is the only $199 challenger for the Wii at this price point, didn’t seem to get a lot of attention; retailer Wal-Mart had the sole deal by offering a special Xbox 360 Arcade bundle that included the Madagascar 2 game, as well as both the first and second Madagascar movies on DVD as part of their special bundle.

Analysts and sources that we spoke with today were very surprised with the aggressive numbers that Sony was able to put up with the PlayStation 3 slim. In addition, they all seemed to have been surprised with the Wii sales numbers, considering that since the price cut the sales of the console have somewhat stalled.

When questioned about the estimated or projected sales numbers for the Xbox 360, our analysts and sources told us that till they see how close the gap is between the sales of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, it will be hard to really know what, if any, impact it will have going forward. It is expected that Microsoft will still enjoy steady sales of the Xbox 360 this holiday season, but it is likely with the recent turn of events that they will not dominate the PlayStation 3 in sales numbers as they have in years past.
