According to data released by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global chip sales in October rose 5.1 percent compared to September, but they were down 3.5 percent year-on-year.
SIA President George Scalise stressed that October was traditionally a strong month for the industry due to increased production ahead of the holiday season. Scalise added that sales increased in all geographic regions and that increased demand was driven by an improvement in overall global economic conditions.
SIA expects global semiconductor sales of $219.7 billion in 2009, a decrease of 12 percent compared to last year's $248.6 billion.
