A lot sooner than we expected it to arrive

We told
you recently about our moles uncovering the news that Sony would follow Microsoft into adding social networking access from the PlayStation 3 with the addition of a Facebook client that was in development for release next year.

Much to our surprise, we can confirm that Facebook support will arrive in the 3.10 firmware update that is expected very soon. While no one has yet said that it will land before the end of the year, it seems that this is what they are shooting for at the moment.

One interesting option is that the user has the ability to link their PlayStation Network account to their Facebook news feed to allow it to automatically update with news of your latest Trophy and PlayStation Store activities. Developers will also be able to get into the game by developing specific game content that can send and publish info into Facebook, based on things such as game stats, for example, into your Facebook news feed.

While Sony has yet to announce support for Twitter, our sources tell us that they are looking at it; but since the Web browser allows users to access Twitter that way, the company might not feel much of a burn to add it to the Xross Media Bar, unless that adds some sort of unique features in the way that it is accessed from the PlayStation 3.

While Xbox 360 owners started getting the latest update today, which included Facebook and Twitter support among several other additions, it seems Sony wants users to know that they are working on Facebook and maybe some other things are in the pipeline, as well.

The one feature that it seems that most PlayStation 3 owners want is cross game chat, and while we continue to hear that it is in the works, it will not be part of the 3.10 firmware update. This news alone seems to indicate that we will see the 3.10 update soon, as we hear that cross game chat is coming, but not until early next year.
