No change on horizon because of PS3 launch

The news that we told you about yesterday that Netflix was coming to the PlayStation 3 for all users got many wondering whether Microsoft would drop their requirement that Netflix support on the Xbox 360 requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription access.

The answer is that Microsoft has no plans to change this requirement for Netflix access on the Xbox 360. According to what we hear, Microsoft views Netflix access as a part of what sets Gold access apart from regular Silver access. Microsoft seems to believe that since Xbox Live Gold access only costs about $4 per month, the value that subscribers get is simply worth the cost.

Right now the biggest difference between the two consoles where Netflix is concerned is the fact that Microsoft offers an integrated Netflix experience that is directly accessible from the dashboard, unlike the PlayStation 3 Netflix experience which requires the user to insert a disc into the drive to access the Netflix application.

The loss of exclusive Netflix console access is, of course, something that can’t exactly make Microsoft happy. The company is, however, rolling out Last.FM, Twitter, Facebook, and new exclusive news support with the upcoming update; and this might help to offset the loss of the Netflix exclusivity for console platforms, as neither the PlayStation 3 nor Wii offer these features at this time. In the end, however, we would not be surprised if Microsoft moves the Netflix access to the silver level to keep up with the PS3, and likely the Wii when it gets Netflix support.
