Will use a disc solution like the PS3

Our sources are filling in the blanks about the Netflix streaming support on the Wii. It comes as no surprise, as we had already told you yesterday that Netflix is already working on support for the Wii and it will use the same type of disc solution as the PlayStation 3 solution.

From what we understand, the disc playback solution is necessary because Microsoft has a deal with Netflix that covers the integration of the actual player into the interface. While we do expect that other console platforms will get the integrated Netflix playback that is built-in to their console interface at some point in the future if it continues to prove popular, it will be some time before Netflix’s agreement with Microsoft expires, according to our sources.

Some are questioning Wii Netflix streaming support because it supports 480p as its highest resolution, which means no HD quality streaming will ever be available on the Wii platform. Still, DVD quality is likely enough for those that own the Wii, and the general belief is that the option will be popular once it is available. If it does prove to be popular the large installed user base on the Wii could be a big gain for Netflix.
