Pre-orders for the inPulse starting now

So, we already told you about the upcoming BlackBerry Smartwatch that was in development with the help of RIM. Word has reached us that that not only has the Smartwatch (which is being called the impulse) been confirmed, but pre-orders are now being accepted.

To clear up any confusion, the inPulse isn’t a BlackBerry Smartphone that you wear on your wrist. We prefer to think of it as a “notification accessory” that has been developed by Allerta in conjunction with RIM. RIM isn’t developing another watch product for the BlackBerry as far as we know, and the startup Allerta is focused on developing accessories such as the inPulse that work in conjunction with your BlackBerry.

As for the specifications, we pretty much got it right in our first report about a week ago. The inPulse will use a 1.3” OLED display with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR for communications to the BlackBerry. It is powered by a 150 mAh rated lithium-ion polymer battery that connects via MicroUSB and can be recharged in about 30 minutes and will last about four days (depending on use) on a single charge. The inPulse features a full metal body with a glass lens. The 22mm wrist band is interchangeable and the inPulse does feature vibration as well as visual alerting. The inPulse’s firmware can be updated, and these updates take place over the Bluetooth connection from the BlackBerry.

The inPulse is compatible with BlackBerry models that are running version 4.3 or higher of the BlackBerry OS and offer Bluetooth connectivity. Users do have to install a very small BlackBerry application that runs in the background on your BlackBerry, so you will need to be able to install software on your BlackBerry as well in order to use the inPulse. The software that runs on the BlackBerry does offer the nice feature of being able to set options such as clock, timers and alarms right from the BlackBerry interface, which is nice.

The latest is that when the inPulse arrives it will set you back a very reasonable $149. While some hoped that it would be cheaper, it seems that this price is fair considering what it offers. The inPulse isn’t likely for everyone, but many will flock to the convenience that it offers. The first shipments of the inPulse are not actually expected to take place until February 2010; the company has started accepting names of those wanting to sign up for the waiting list, but they are not yet taking payment. We think the inPulse could end up being quite popular with those BlackBerry users who just can’t seem to put the device down.

Visit the Allerta Web site here to get all of the details and sign up on the waiting list.
