Alternative solutions should not be blocked

The news that Microsoft would be stopping users from the ability to use alternative memory card solutions with the Xbox 360 seems to have struck a cord with both the companies that produce them as well as the users that buy them.

Examining the statement in the Major Nelson Blog that the next update (when it starts to roll out) will stop the use of unofficial memory units is being viewed as a step by Microsoft to prevent customers from exercising their freedom of choice, according to Datel, the maker of the Max Memory card solution for the Xbox 360.

Unlike the Microsoft Memory Unit solutions, the Max Memory solution houses user-purchased Micro SDHC cards up to 16GB, which are far greater than the 512MB that the Microsoft solution offers. The fact that the Max Memory solution is user swappable allows the user to have multiple Micro SDHC card to extend the amount of memory beyond that of the typical single card Microsoft solution.

While Datel isn’t yet saying if they will be able to overcome the block that will be in place with the next update, the company says that they are “following the issue and awaiting the outcome like everyone else” according to published reports. Sources tell us that it is unlikely that owners of the cards such as the Max Memory will be able to update them to work with the latest update, which leaves users with little choice beyond the purchase of a Microsoft Memory Unit or a Microsoft Xbox 360 hard drive.
