Sony needs to move inventory out of the channel

Sony continues to remain mum about the possibility of a new slim PlayStation 3 to be on tap, but our sources have checked in to tell us that retailers are now getting the word that they will see no additional shipments of PlayStation 3 stock until September.

While we already know that Sony is in the process of getting the new slim PlayStation 3 consoles ready to invade the channel, the news that the company will not start shipping the new slim PS3 until September seems to now go hand in hand with an expected announcement at the Sony press conference next week at GamesCon.

Given the latest news that Microsoft will be moving to discontinue the Xbox 360 Pro and focus on the Elite moving forward after a price cut does seem to confirm that Sony will, in fact, unveil the new system next week.

It is still unclear what incentives Sony might apply to help move PlayStation 3 inventory, but it does seem that both Sony and Microsoft are making their final preparations to do battle this holiday season; and it will be the new slim PlayStation 3 versus the Xbox 360 Elite. We do suspect that it is shaping up to be an interesting showdown this holiday season between the two consoles.
