Disney pulled the plug after poor sales on initial release

Our sources are now confirming to us that Disney Interactive actually pulled the plug on the Pure 2 sequel after the title actually only sold a surprising 300,000 units across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.

Developer Black Rock Studios was told to halt all development on Pure 2 and direct all their efforts toward their new Split/Second, which is a cinematic racing title that is due out in early 2010 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms.

From the whispers that we hear, Disney was not impressed with the reception of Pure, despite all of the critical acclaim and awards that the title was able to win. According to our sources, in addition to pulling the plug on the sequel, Disney Interactive has no plans to revisit it for a potential sequel anytime soon, as the publisher believes that the buying public didn’t get it.

We think that actuality it was Disney Interactive’s poor marketing of Pure that caused the title to do so poorly. We can remember how we stumbled on the title by accident and how much we liked it after playing the demo. When we took our enthusiasm to a local Game Stop to purchase the title, we had a difficult time getting the staff interested in the title, as they had heard next to nothing about it. We convinced the staff to give it a try and when we stopped in the store a few days later, they were raving about how good Pure really was and how good the sales could have been if the title had received proper promotion from Disney Interactive.

While we think that Split/Second looks amazing and has a truly unique look and feel that could equal a very good title when released, it is sad to see that Black Rock will not get to extend the Pure franchise with a sequel. If the title would have been marketed better, it could have been a stellar performer for Disney; but instead, it will be another one-off title on what might have been.
