Good lineup of titles for launch this summer

As we announced previously, Microsoft is looking for a repeat sales performance with their Summer of Arcade promotion on Xbox Live Arcade. The official summer of Arcade 2009 lineup has been officially announced, along with the release dates and pricing. Not many surprises are to be had with the title announcements, but some of the prices might leave some scratching their heads.

Summer of Arcade will kick into gear on July 22nd when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time Re-shelled is released for 1,200 Microsoft Points. The new enhanced 3D version of the arcade is being released by Ubisoft and was developed by their Singapore studio.

Next in line will be the long-awaited Marvel vs. Capcom 2, along with Backbone, which will be available for download on July 29th. The new version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 will feature sharp HD graphics and an enhanced look, but it will also be priced at 1,200 Microsoft Points.

August 5th will be Splosion Man from developer Twisted Pixel, who was the developer of the popular title, The Maw. The game will offer a lot of replay value with 50 single-player and multiplayer levels. The game features a character that has the ability to explode himself as part of the game play in this title that will go for only 800 Microsoft Points when it arrives.

Motorcycle racing will be the theme of the physics heavy Trials HD, which will arrive on August 12th. Then, Shadow Complex from Epic-owned Chair Entertainment. Both titles will cost 1,200 Microsoft Points when they arrive for download.

It seems the theme that many are already calling the Summer of Arcade is the move to 1,200 Microsoft Point Xbox Live Arcade titles. At 1,200 Microsoft points these titles will cost about $15 U.S. per title, and while the content that is contained in these titles is far beyond the more casual arcade game content that we have seen in many previous titles, a good number of consumers are already complaining about the move to higher prices.

Developers claim that producing these higher quality titles simply costs more money, and in order to recoup their investment the higher price is necessary. Still, many Xbox owners continue to pass on the higher-priced titles in favor of titles costing the least amount of Microsoft Points. While the Summer of Arcade is clearly chock full of “A” list high-quality titles for the Xbox 360, sales might not go as planned with so many good titles that are high priced being released in such a short time frame. We will have to wait and see, but we suspect that sales might be lower than developers and publishers expect at 1,200 points per title.
