Fujitsu has decided that Silicon Valley is not the
best place for some of its units to hang out and has decided to move them
elsewhere.
Fujitsu America has 450 employees in Sunnyvale and
it is not clear how many are about to be moved from the technology hub of the
US. A spokesman from Schwartz Communications, which
represents Fujitsu Computer Products of America, told the Business Journal that
the whole company was exiting Sunnyvale. It has been known that the company will
be laying off 54 workers from July 1.
But a spokesperson from Fujitsu America, a separate unit which is also based in Sunnyvale, said his division isn't leaving the valley. Fujitsu America said that Sunnyvale is strategically important as a “centre of gravity” for not only its executive team but for a number of Fujitsu companies, including Fujitsu’s R&D organization, data center operations and Fujitsu Management Services.
Fujitsu is definitely slimming down. Toshiba
announced in January that it planned to acquire Fujitsu's hard disk drive
business. Fujitsu, the 16th largest employer in Sunnyvale,
has been hammered by the economy. Silicon Valley is still a jolly expensive
place to rent an office.
