Font of all knowledge

The bloke
who invented the Comic Sans typeface sympathises with people who want to have its use banned.

Vincent Connare said he was amused and mortified, as Comic Sans has spread from its days as a software project at Microsoft 15 years ago to something which was incredibly popular.

Now the typeface, which is designed to look like comic book lettering, is everywhere and lots of people really hate it. Connare told the Wall Street Journal that people who love it don't know anything about typography. However those who hate it don't seem to know much either.

Connare, uses a font called Magpie, Microsoft owns comic sans, which was designed for Redmond's Microsoft Bob turkey. When it was used in Windows, its use took off and it became seen as the font that you used when you wanted to appear cool and a little unconventional.

Connare is not too happy with the font's success. For a while he agreed to let his image be used in the campaign to ban it. Fortunately, the use of the typeface is slowly sliding out of popularity. If anything it is starting to look a bit retro, he said.
