Starting at £179.99

Play.com has put up the Acer Aspire Revo for pre-order and the company is offering four different SKUs of the system, ranging in price from £179.99 (€200/$268) to a whopping £329.99 (€368/$491). Not quite as cheap as initial details was suggesting, but the entry level model isn't too bad, except that you wouldn't really want that one.

Why are we saying this? Well, Acer has ousted a model that didn't leak and well, it's not quite living up to the expectations of what most people would want from an ION based system. Let's start by taking a look at the common specs across all four models and we'll get to explaining why the entry level model is a no go.

All four models sports the single core Atom 230 processors clocked at 1.6GHz and of course the Nvidia ION chipset (Geforce 9400M). On top of this you also get 802.11b/g WiFi on all models, HDMI, eSATA, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, 10/100Mbit Ethernet (sorry, no Gigabit in sight), a D-sub connector, six USB 2.0 ports and a pair of audio jacks. All models but the most expensive one comes with a wired keyboard and mouse, while the £329.99 model comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

So what does the entry level price of £179.99 get you on top of the base specs? Well, not much to be honest, as you're looking at a mere 1GB of RAM (standard nettop/netbook spec), a paltry 8GB SSD drive and an unknown Linux distribution. Considering the media centric abilities of the Revo, we can't see a lot of people being interested in this model, especially considering that you'd have to invest in an external drive to be able to use it as an HTPC.

The next model will set you back £249.99 (€279/$372) which is a steep jump up in price, but the extra money buys you 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Windows Vista Home Premium (which we presume is the largest share of the price bump). The £299.99 (€335/$446) model adds the 3D game controller and 10 games, none of which really seems worth the price premium.

Finally the £329.99 model gives you everything the £299.99 model does plus that wireless keyboard and mouse. Again, not exactly a great value deal. Unless you really don't want Windows, the £249.99 looks like it offers the best value for money, although things might still change with regard to the SKUs, as these are pre-order details and the leaked information detailed slightly different SKUs.

You'll have to wait until the 18th of May if you want one, but that's just a little over a month away.
