A 12 year-old girl was told to stop
playing computer games for two weeks after she caught a serious hand infection
caused by excessive gaming.
"Palmare PlayStation Hidradenitis" has
been identified by professor Vincent Piguet from the University Hospital of
Geneva, and includes painful lesions on her palms for four weeks.
She had huge red nodes which were very
spectacular. It turned out that the girl hid from her parents the fact that she
spent hours on her PlayStation and Piguet worked out that the nodes were caused
by sweat activating minuscule cutaneous injuries.
Apparently after ten days the illness
went away and the girl suffered from a large influx of 'life' and is believed to
have seen 'open spaces' for the first time in a long while.
The research was published in the
British Journal of Dermatology.
