A 16-year-old office worker was sacked on Monday after she described her job as 'boring' on popular social notworking site Facebook.
Kimberley Swann was summoned to the manager's office, where she was
told her employment was being terminated immediately. She was handed a
letter which read: "Following your comments made on Facebook about your
job and the
company we feel it is better that, as you are not happy and do not
enjoy your work we end your employment with Ivell Marketing &
Logistics with immediate effect."
Swann said she was shocked that a comment on her personal site could have caused her to loose her job.
"I did not even put the company's name, I just put that my job
was boring. They were just being nosy, going through everything," said
Swann. "I was an office administrator so of course it was boring."
Stephen Ivell, the owner of the company, said Kimberley was a lovely girl and that it was a shame things did not work out, and that the decision to sack her was a tough one. We, however, are sure his managing and eavesdropping skills would be highly appreciated in a North Korean forced labor camp.
The incident has once again sparked a row as to whether employees
personal communication could be used by companies as grounds for a
dismissal, and Union leaders are up in arms.
"Most employers wouldn't dream of following their staff down the pub to
see if they were sounding off about work to their friends," said Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary.
