To be unveiled at a press conference on February 9th

The continued interest in the Amazon Kindle e-book reader continues to be strong, and so much so, in fact, that availability this past holiday season was non-existent at best. It seems, however, tight availability may be giving way to a major revision.

According to our bookworms, Amazon is planning a press conference on February 9th in New York City, at which we have been told to expect the unveiling of the Kindle 2 or the second generation of the Kindle e-book reader, if you prefer.

While we can’t tell you much about the specifics on what to expect from the second generation Kindle, we can tell you that it does seem likely that latest revision will add some of the major features that users have been asking for. However, our bookworms tell us that it is a bit wider and longer than the previous generation and a new joystick will take the place of the scroll wheel.

On the negative side, it appears from what we are being told that the second generation model will ditch the SD card slot and it will not have a user accessible battery; instead you will now be able to charge it with a mini-USB cable.

We will have to see what February 9th brings from Amazon in NYC, but we suspect that it will be a Kindle 2.
