Still $999, but more bang for the buck

Apple has given a serious boost to the low-end MacBook, but did not raise the price. The strategy could raise some eyebrows, as the biggest upgrade is the decision to do away with integrated graphics.

The low-end MacBook will feature the Nvidia GeForce 9400M with 256MB of RAM, which is the same graphics used in the higher-end model. The boost in graphics performance should be very apparent.

While the $999 MacBook still features the white polycarbonate shell, it will now use the same 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 1066MHz bus that the mid-range model uses. In addition, the Bluetooth has been upgraded from version 2.0 to 2.1.

Unlike the higher end models, this MacBook will still offer a Firewire port that is missing from the higher end models. The other specs are still the same, which include the 13-inch LCD display, 8X SuperDrive, and 120GB 5400 RPM hard drive; but the memory has been upgraded to 2GB of DDR2 running at 667MHz, rather than the 1066MHz seen in the higher-end models.

While Apple will offer some additional BTO options, the options are mostly centered on storage upgrades, which range from 160GB to as much as 320GB at additional cost. In addition, users can order the unit with 4GB of RAM, as well, for an additional price of $150.
