One fix to break them all

Seagate is
just out of luck these days, plain and simple. Shortly after it released a firmware fix for its 11th gen Barracuda drives, reports have emerged that the fix itself kills unaffected drives.

Users of 500GB and 1TB drives seem to be at risk, and some have already reported the new firmware had turned their collection of music, movies and porn into a rather unwieldy paperweight.

There's hope for these unlucky souls, as it seems possible to revert to the original AD14 firmware, and get your data back, although we wouldn't count on it.

Seagate's 7200.12 drives are just around the corner, and they look promising. However, the ongoing 7200.11 controversy has the potential to tarnish Seagate's reputation, and we can only hope it will clean up the mess soon.
