Acer 12, Asus 7 million units

Acer and Asustek have reportedly set rather high netbook sales targets for 2009, following great success with their Aspire One and Eee PC series netbooks in the last months of 2008.

Acer expects to ship 12-13 million netbooks this year, and in December 2008 in managed to sell 500,000 Aspire One netbooks in the US alone. Although it has surpassed Asus in total netbook shipments, Acer still has just a single netbook design to offer, the 8.9-inch Aspire One. It is expected to launch several models with larger, 10.2 or 11.6-inch screens in 2009, and the 10.2-inch model could appear as early as February.

Asus has also had great success with its 10.2-inch Eee PC 1000HA and the more affordable 8.9-inch Eee PC 900HA near the end of 2008. It now expects to ship 7.1 to 7.3 million units in 2009. Asus claims it will keep its Eee PC series netbooks under 10 inches, however, it has recently released the N10, an Atom powered netbook which is not part of the Eee PC series.
