Has secondary 4.3in screen
By the looks of the stuff that is coming out of Voodoo's product development, it looks like HP invested its money wisely when it bought Voodoo. The Firefly prototype that has turned up at Laptop mag shows yet more inventiveness and innovation from the ex Voodoo guys and it's another unique product in more than one way.
The Firefly has a main 17.1in display with a native resolution of 1,920x1,080 and nestled just below it is a secondary 4.3in display with 800x480 resolution. We're not sure if this is exactly useful, but it's an interesting concept design. But the two displays aren't the only selling points of this huge notebook as it also packs some serious hardware.
How about a quad core 2.4GHz Core 2 Extreme CPU, 4GB of RAM and a pair of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 graphics cards with DVI and HDMI outputs? The prototype also packed a 250GB 7,200rpm hard drive, X-Fi audio with 5.1-channel analog outputs and optical S/PDIF out, a night vision webcam (why?) and an unusually located touch pad that supports multi-touch. We're not sure what drove the Voodoo guys to place the huge touch pad on the right hand side of the keyboard, but it's an interesting move and it's supposedly meant to have been done for gamers.
The Firefly also has a back-lit keyboard and it's meant to be overclockable for those that want to try to push their notebook to the limits of what the cooling system can cope with. Finally it has a peculiarly located batter, which can be accessed by removing the wrist rest below the keyboard on the top of the notebook. The wrist rest can be swapped for various options such a rubberised one, which is a nice touch. At 5.9kg it's hardly a light weight notebook though, but we're sure that its intended customer base isn't going to be too worried about this.
